Saludos, Greetings, Namaste,
Zali here wishing happy holidays to you and yours. Was great seeing those of you I could over the Xmas weekend. To all the rest hope all going well and that you find yourself in good health.
If you will, please allow me a moment of your time. I was moved to send this to you in hopes we can do a little something to help.
I have known the Guthrie family for about 10 years. In that time I have come to care for and love them as if my own family. Their kindness and generosity are legend. This I have experienced first hand in time of need and pleasure. I recently got to meet Tom Guthrie, the last of the clan yet to meet, this past summer at his and Mary's Bed and Breakfast The Log Hous in Leavenworth, WA. They opened their home to me and shared the Guthrie clan hospitality.
Tom is quite ill and has a difficult path ahead.
He has an aggressive form of lymphoma, prostate cancer and 3 years, several surgeries and chemotherapy later the cancer has started infiltrating his bone marrow. The remaining options are limited and costly. His community in Leavenworth, WA is giving a benefit dinner and auction to assist with some of that cost and to show their emotional support for him and his family.
An idea I had was that perhaps we could all chip in to purchase a weekend at their B & B to be auctioned at the fundraiser dinner. But there are many other ways we can help including but not limited to sending cards, books, magazines, well wishes, prayers or however you choose to manifest and share energy toward another.
The Guthries, all chose to dedicate themselves in occupations or professions that serve the greater good through medical fields whether through research, the practice of medicine, writing or volunteering. Tom's dad Dr. Robert Guthrie information below.
Thank you so very much for taking time from your busy days to read this.
Anything that you do will be greatly appreciated.
Contact information follows.
Much metta,
zali

For those of you in medical fields Tom is the son of renowned microbiologist Dr. Robert Guthrie who developed the PKU screening that today spares thousands of newborns from mental retardation. Dr. Guthrie developed the bacterial inhibition assay used for screening for PKU and MSUD.Ê If it had not been for Dr. Guthrie, persons with MSUD would have a much greater risk of damage and death today.
All newborns in the U.S. and in many parts of the world now have a couple of drops of blood drawn from their heels in order to test them for PKU and a host of other genetic disorders that can cause mental retardation or premature death if not treated immediately. This is the biography of the man best known for his development of newborn screening for PKU.
Tthis was only one of his prodigious accomplishments. Tests were developed in Bob Guthrie's laboratory for more than 30 treatable disorders that cause mental retardation or death, giving the term "newborn screening" fresh meaning.
He also waged a battle against lead poisoning long before the public or the medical community became concerned about this danger Bob was able to identify one of the major causes of lead poisoning in the Middle East and the Indian subcontinent. His sabbatical leave in 1968 in New Zealand included efforts to introduce newborn screening into the Pacific Islands.
Following his stay in Dunedin, New Zealand, Bob and his family continued to work their way around the world, from Australia, South Africa, Spain, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Scandinavia and the British Isles. He was also a member of the Physicians for Social Responsibility-an organization devoted to preventing nuclear war and opposing nuclear weapons testing.
